The Inter-Africa Network for Human Rights (AFRONET) on Tuesday said it intended to institute legal action against the Zambian police for cases of rape and assault against university students during unrest last week.
Students at the Lusaka and Copperbelt campuses of the University of Zambia (UNZA) were demonstrating against an increase in fees, prompting President Frederick Chiluba to send in police to close the Lusaka campus.
Ngande Mwanajiti of AFRONET, was reported as saying 31 students were injured when the police stormed the campus and that an unspecified number of female students were raped.
Mwanajiti called the police action the “most barbaric incident” at the university since it opened in 1967.
