Guinea has sent several thousand troop reinforcements to guard its border with Sierra Leone against further rebel incursions, news reports said yesterday. The latest insurgency, in which RUF rebels attacked and burnt homes in Guinean villages in Petehya and Faranah districts last week, follows the fall of the western Sierra Leonean town of Kambia to the RUF.
The rebels took Kambia, about 15 km from the Guinean border, two weeks ago when Guinean troops with ECOMOG withdrew to avoid civilian casualties, Reuters quoted Guinean ECOMOG officers as saying.
MISNA reported devastation in Kambia. Citing people recently displaced from the town, it said the rebels had torched many buildings including the hospital, the poliomyelitis centre, a school and a missionary centre.
