UNICEF, WFP intervention in Mount Sion

    The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), has distributed 2,496 kg of high-protein biscuits to some 1,600 households displaced on Friday by fighting between rebels and government forces in Mount Sion, in Gikungu, the agency's communications officer, Sara Johansson, told IRIN.

    She said the biscuits had been distributed on Saturday and Sunday through a local partner in Kamenge, one Bujumbura's suburbs hardest hit by rebel shelling. UNICEF had also provided 33-mg Aquatabs to chlorinate 50,000 litres of water to support the International Rescue Committee's intervention at Mount Sion. Another UN agency, the World Food Programme, was "conducting food distribution" in the hills around the area on Tuesday and would continue doing soon Wednesday, Johanssen said.

    The rebel shelling of the suburbs of Kiriri, Kamenge, and Mutanga has caused widespread panic among residents.
