High AIDS rates threaten camp's children

    JOHANNESBURG

    The high HIV/AIDS infection rate in northern and north eastern Uganda's displaced person's camps is threatening a new generation of children.

    It is estimated that the infection rate within the camps had doubled from the country's average of about six to 12 percent.

    Christine Amongin Aporu, the state minister for disaster preparedness, said the general health situation in the camps had been made worse by the lack of drugs and health personnel.

    "This has forced the populace in these camps to depend on drug shops operated by unqualified people. Some of them buy expired drugs and people are practicing self-prescription," Aporu was quoted by a local newspaper, New Vision, as saying.
