Punitive measures threatened against diversion of AIDS drugs

Zambia's Ministry of Health has threatened punitive measures against the diversion of anti-AIDS drugs by health personnel. The warning follows reports that people living with HIV/AIDS were being turned away for lack of drugs at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in the capital, Lusaka. Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary Simon Miti advised HIV-positive people who had been denied drugs to report cases to his office for action. Miti was quoted by a local newspaper, The Times of Zambia, as saying: "We have enough antiretroviral drugs in the hospitals, and we will soon increase the supply of the drugs throughout the country."
