Public sector HIV/AIDS impact discussed

    JOHANNESBURG

    A group of experts met recently at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London to assess the Commonwealth Human Resource Management Strategy on the impact of HIV/AIDS in the public sector.

    Organised by the secretariat's Governance and Institutional Development Division (GIDD), the event was aimed at improving public sector performance in light of the social and economic impact of HIV/AIDS, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.

    Professor Victor Ayeni, the GIDD director, said the meeting was the result of a mandate issued by Commonwealth Heads of Government to develop a programme of action to assist member countries in developing strategies to ensure that effective public sector services were sustained in the face of HIV/AIDS.

    Ayeni was quoted by the Commonwealth News and Information Service as saying: "Human resource management policy issues including contingency planning, employment and labour legislation, and counselling and support issues were discussed."
