The UN has said there is no truth to reports that it agreed to a proposal to halt direct funding to AIDS NGOs in Southern Africa.
In a recent report Reuters had quoted the director-general of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, as having said: "This is what the countries have proposed, and it has been endorsed. The money will only be channelled through the governments' central authorities dealing with AIDS."
Matsuura also said NGOs would no longer receive direct funding from UN agencies because they lacked accountability.
However, Richard Delate, the UNAIDS media and information consultant for Southern Africa, told the UN news service, PlusNews, that the UN regarded NGOs as "indispensable partners in the fight against HIV/AIDS, and funding to the organisations will not be stopped."
