Zimbabwe has announced plans for the March 2004 rollout of anti-AIDS treatment at five pilot sites across the country.
Health officials have expressed optimism over the success of the roll out, despite overwhelming obstacles, particularly the acute shortage of foreign currency.
Dr Owen Mugurungu, the coordinator of AIDS and TB programmes in the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare, told the UN news service, PlusNews: "Our major problem is to make sure that we have a reliable and adequate supply of drugs."
The ministry of health singled out existing laboratories at most hospitals, a strong medicines regulatory authority and the availability of cheaper generic drugs as positive signs for the success of the programme.
