India donates anti-AIDS drugs for babies

    JOHANNESBURG
    India has donated 1,000 bottles of the anti-AIDS drug Nevirapine to help Tanzania prevent the mother-to-child transmission of HIV, the BBC reported. Research shows that a single dose of the drug to an HIV-positive woman during labour, and a single dose to the infant soon after birth, reduces the child's chance of infection by up to 80 percent. Tanzania's Ministry of Health has estimated that some 73,000 children are born with HIV every year. Health minister Anna Abdallah stressed the importance of testing pregnant women for HIV, and said testing sites were available at all major hospitals.
