Anti-AIDS activists disappointed by condom opponents

A leading social marketing organisation has expressed "disappointment" over challenges to the effectiveness of condoms in checking HIV/AIDS in Tanzania. Population Services International (PSI), with the support of various bodies, including the World Health Organisation (WHO), conduct social marketing for preventive health products like condoms and contraceptives. PSI executive director in Tanzania, Brad Lucas, said it was frustrating to see some people, including senior clerics, claiming that the use of condoms promoted promiscuity. Lucas was quoted by the Agence France-Presse news agency as saying: "It is some 20 years now since the first HIV case was diagnosed in the country, and still there are people, some in reputable positions, who are against the condom."
