Huge HIV/AIDS fund launched by Red Cross

    JOHANNESBURG

    The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the world's largest relief agency, has launched a fund to finance antiretroviral treatment for all its workers living with HIV/AIDS.

    In a recent statement the Federation said an estimated 200,000 of its 97 million helpers and employees around the world were HIV-positive.

    The fund will operate separately from the Federation's other work and be financed by a contribution of one percent from employee salaries to provide treatment to at least 300 people in the first phase.

    The Federation statement also noted that all staff living with HIV/AIDS were guaranteed five years of drug supplies, with priority given to those living in countries where there was no other funding option.
