Global AIDS Fund announces millions

    JOHANNESBURG

    The Global Fund for AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria on Thursday announced the approval of grants totalling US $623 million to tackle the three diseases in developing countries.

    In a recent statement the Fund said this brought the amount of money approved by the organisation for programmes to $2.1 billion during its two-year history.

    However, AIDS activists have said the approved amount fell far short of what NGOs needed to implement their respective projects.

    Sharonann Lynch of the US-based NGO, Health GAP, said: "This is a major disappointment, because it will mean a drop in the number of people to be covered by the fund for antiretroviral treatment."

    UNAIDS has estimated that funds of about $10.5 billion were needed to carry out its work in developing countries for 2004.
