Former president calls for AIDS assistance

    JOHANNESBURG

    Former Zambian president Kenneth Kaunda on Wednesday appealed to the international community to assist in tackling the HIV/AIDS crisis in Africa.

    During his keynote address at this week's launch of Africa's new HIV/AIDS commission, Kaunda said the impact of the pandemic created instability in the continent's development process and put social structures under great stress.

    The new Commission on HIV/AIDS and Governance for Africa (CHGA) was launched by the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), to help tackle the devastating effects of the pandemic in Africa.

    The Agence France-Presse (AFP) news service quoted Kaunda as saying: "While recognising the impact of HIV/AIDS on Africa, we must quickly point out that HIV/AIDS is a world problem and a problem for the whole of humanity."
