Public primary schools in Kenya are still discriminating against children living with HIV/AIDS, a local AIDS NGO has said.
The Nyumbani Children's Home said this was despite the recent government announcement of a free primary education policy to provide for children living with, and orphaned by, HIV/AIDS.
Chief manager for the home, Protus Lumiti, said he was currently receiving legal counsel to help define the discrimination as unconstitutional.
Ababu Namwamba, Lumiti's chief legal counsel, confirmed that the suit aimed to protect all children denied access to free primary education.
Local newspaper The East African Standard quoted Namwamba as saying: "The suit will also sensitise and raise public awareness that there is nothing to fear from interacting with people living with HIV/AIDS."
