Heads of state of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) have jointly pledged to tackle the region's HIV/AIDS crisis.
The commitment came at the close of the recent SADC summit in Tanzania, where the country's President, Benjamin Mkapa, said the "chief concerns were HIV/AIDS and poverty".
He also said the SADC Council of Ministers had approved a regional "2003-2007 HIV/AIDS Framework and Programme of Action", for which they would need US $10.5 million to implement.
Agence France Presse (AFP) quoted Mkapa as saying: "It [the framework] offers us a measurable target against which our efforts, actions and successes - or lack thereof - will be measured."
