US mayors to focus on HIV/AIDS

    JOHANNESBURG

    A delegation of 10 US mayors is set to visit four African countries to focus on HIV/AIDS and its impact on economic and youth development.

    The visit is a follow-up to initial meetings in June between US and African mayors, when Namibia, Swaziland and Uganda participated.

    The delegation, which is travelling under the auspices of the US Conference of Mayors, is expected to assess the impact of HIV/AIDS, identify where gaps in services exist and observe how African mayors respond.

    "This mission will allow US mayors to share experiences with the continent's mayors and build collaborative partnerships in response to the devastating impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic," the Conference statement said.

    The delegation will visit South Africa, Namibia, Swaziland and Uganda between 29 August and 4 September.
