Employees of South Africa's rail freight provider, Spoornet, are set to benefit from a US $67 million workplace HIV/AIDS drug programme.
The company said its "Lifestyle Management Programme" was aimed at enhancing the ability of HIV-positive employees to remain productive in the workplace.
Spoornet chief executive officer, Dolly Mokgatle, said in a statement that HIV/AIDS affected all parts of any company operation and was not solely a medical issue.
"If the workplace is not prepared, the pandemic could adversely affect legal and health care costs, as well as employee productivity," Mokgatle added.
She confirmed that medical intervention would include prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV for pregnant employees, treatment for certain opportunistic infections, such as TB, and on-duty injury.
