AIDS and food security site launched

    JOHANNESBURG

    The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has announced the launch of a new website to educate people on the links between HIV/AIDS and food security.

    FAO population and development chief, Marcela Villarreal, said in a statement: "There is a lot of information available on HIV/AIDS, but not so much on its relationship to agriculture, rural development and food security."

    The site features FAO information related to HIV/AIDS, and is intended to be a comprehensive resource for researchers, policy-makers, NGOs and people living with HIV/AIDS.

    It includes "concrete strategies and activities that [staff in ministries of agriculture and rural development] can incorporate into their day-to-day work," Villarreal said.

    She said while funds were available from the World Bank and the Global AIDS Fund, "agricultural staff often did not know what kind of activities they can propose".
