More AIDS drugs funding - minister

Kenya's HIV/AIDS drug programme is to benefit from a US $180 million Global AIDS Fund grant over the next five years to fight HIV/AIDS and other diseases, local newspaper The Nation reported on Wednesday. However, health minister Charity Ngilu said only US $30 million of the total grant would be used for the purchase of antiretrovirals. "This is a drop in the ocean. Only 3,000 people would benefit from the HIV/AIDS drug programme," Ngilu said. An estimated 200,000 people are in need of the medication. She said her ministry planned on sending a further proposal to the Fund for an additional US $200 million for more drugs and HIV/AIDS orphan support. "We still need more funding for the country's large number of people living with HIV/AIDS to have access to treatment," Ngilu added.
