New HIV/AIDS technology from South Africa could generate billions of dollars if exported globally, the South African Press Association (SAPA) reported on Monday.
South Africa's National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) said its PanLeucogated CD4 T-cell enumeration technique (PLG CD4)
greatly reduces the cost of monitoring the immune levels of people living with HIV/AIDS.
"In Third World countries there's really a desperate need for innovation, there's no money. With the new technique, there's a chance to bring down costs," PLG CD4 inventor, Debbie Glencross, said.
Glencross said the PLG CD4 was both cheaper and more accurate than existing tests in providing a count of CD4 T-cells. CD4 T-cells indicate the status of the immune system.
