The African Commission of Human and Peoples' Right is to hold its 32nd ordinary session from 17-31 October, in The Gambian capital, Banjul, the African Union (AU) reported on Monday.
The session is expected to be attended by parties to the African Charter and Peoples Rights, representatives of UN agencies, Inter-governmental Organizations and Non-Governmental Organizations. Participants will examine human rights in Africa, the status of submission of periodic reports by the parties and cooperation with national human rights institutions and NGOs, among other issues.
The session, the AU said, would also deliberate on functions of the Commission within the AU, strategies for quick ratification of the protocols of the African Charter on the establishment of an African Court, protection of refugees and displaced persons and the situation of human rights defenders on the continent.
The Commission will also consider the activity reports of the Special Rapporteurs on Prisons and Conditions of Detention in Africa and on the Rights of Women in Africa.
The African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, adopted by African heads of state in June 1981 in Kenya and entered into force on 21 October, 1986. The day will be marked during the session.
