US President George Bush has been urged to actively support the peace process in the Democratic Republic of Congo by making assistance to the DRC and Rwanda conditional on the implementation of the Lusaka and the Pretoria peace agreements.
A letter sent to Bush by the advocacy body, Refugees International, stated he should stress to DRC President Joseph Kabila and Rwandan President Paul Kagame that US support to their governments depended on an "uncompromising commitment" to the agreements.
Bush should also urge each of them to show leadership, as well as supporting the UN mission in the DRC (MONUC), which remained "inadequate" given the size of the country, RI said.
"If Presidents Kagame and Kabila push forward and implement the peace accords, only a dramatically strengthened UN peacekeeping force that goes beyond the current mandate will be able to consolidate the peace," it added.
Bush was due to hold talks with Kabila and Kagame in New York, a meeting which RI said came at an "important juncture".
