The second round of training for 54 police instructors began on Monday in the city of Kisangani, northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), UN spokesman Hamadoun Toure told IRIN.
Toure, spokesman for the UN Mission in the DRC (known as MONUC), said training would last until 12 October. It would include civic education, legal studies and human rights law, as well as language training, organisational skills and professional ethics.
The first round of training took place from 29 July until 31 August. In round three, the newly trained instructors will go on to recruit and train policemen who will serve throughout Province Orientale. They will also facilitate the withdrawal from Kisangani of the Rwanda-backed Rassemblement congolais pour la democratie (RCD-Goma) currently administering the area.
The training has been welcomed by RCD-Goma, which said it marked an important step towards the demilitarisation of Kisangani.
"For MONUC the operation is an accompaniment of, and not a precondition to, the demilitarisation of Kisangani," the UN mission commented.
