The Burundian cabinet has been debating a bill proposing the establishment of a truth and reconciliation commission, somewhat along the lines of a similar body set up in South Africa following the end of its apartheid era, a local news organisations, @rib News, reported.
The content of the bill is based is based on recommendations made by a ministerial committee.
The undertaking to set up a truth commission was included in the Arusha Peace and Reconciliation Agreement for Burundi of 28 August 2000, which eventually led to the inauguration on 1 November 2001 of a transitional power-sharing government of Hutus and Tutsis.
