Ambassador Berhanu Dinka, the UN Secretary-General's newly appointed Special Representative for Burundi, established himself in the capital, Bujumbura, on Monday. He officially assumed his duties on 1 July, but has most recently been involved in efforts to advance the Burundi peace process by mobilising the support of the international community while based at UN headquarters in New York.
Dinka previously served as Annan's Special Representative for the Great Lakes Region. He will be replaced by Ibrahima Fall, who is due to arrive at his office in Nairobi, Kenya, next week. Fall was once Senegal's minister of education, and of foreign affairs. He served recently as Assistant Secretary-General in the UN Department of Political Affairs.
In addition to his role as SRSG for Burundi, Dinka will continue to serve as chairman of the Implementation Monitoring Committee of the Arusha peace accord, a position he previously held in his capacity as SRSG for the Great Lakes Region.
Dinka, an Ethiopian career diplomat, has served as his country's permanent representative at the UN.
