A Sierra Leonean NGO, Current Evangelism Ministries (CEM), aims to open a peace and conflict resolution centre in the capital, Freetown, if it receives adequate funding, according to a project proposal IRIN received.
The National Centre for Peace Education and Conflict Resolution (NACE-PECORE) would offer training to trainers "to promote non-violent social change and to teach adults and children life skills essential to developing, maintaining and restoring harmonious relationships through the principles of peace education in Sierra Leone," the proposal said. Other activities would include developing local personnel through capacity building, opening a resource centre and library, conducting research into traditional conflict resolution and lobbying and advocacy.
The three year project, which is appealing for US $613,175, would target families, communities, organisations, educational institutions, faith communities, the corporate sector and governmental agencies, it added.
The project proposal follows needs assessment missions CEM conducted in Sierra Leone in 2000 and 2001. The proposed centre is to be set up in partnership with the US-based Florida Institute for Peace Education and Research Inc, the Sierra Leonean ministry of Youth, Education and Sports and the ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Childrens' Affairs and local NGOs.
