Eritrean ambassador presents credentials

The newly appointed Eritrean ambassador to Somalia, Alem Negash, has presented his credentials to the president of the interim government of Somalia, Abdiqassim Salad Hassan.

Ambassador Negash told IRIN on Tuesday that his presence in Mogadishu was indicative of Eritrea's willingness to help Somalia find a lasting solution to its problems. Eritrea's deputy ambassador to Kenya, Teweldemedhin Tesfamariam, added that by sending an envoy to Somalia, Asmara was "endeavouring to help get back a unified Somalia". "Given the historical good relationship between Somalia and Eritrea, we would like to see Somalis get rid of their divisions and problems for a better future," he told IRIN.

For his part, Abdiqassim said relations between the two countries were "deep and longstanding", according to his director of information, Abdirahman Dinari. Dinari said Abdiqassim had asked the Eritrean envoy to convey his best wishes to Eritrean President Isayas Afewerki.

Ambassador Negash is a veteran of the Eritrean war of independence and a member of the Eritrean People's Liberation Front. Despite the fact that Somalia's Transitional National Government enjoys the support of many foreign governments, Negash is only the second ambassador to present his credentials in Mogadishu. In September last year, the Djibouti ambassador presented his credentials to Abdiqassim.
