The border area of Moyale between Kenya and Ethiopia is now calm after an earlier incursion by Ethiopian troops, a local MP told IRIN on Monday.
On 30 January, the government-owned Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) reported that "armed Ethiopian soldiers" had "taken over" a Kenyan primary school on the border and locked out pupils and staff.
The MP, Dr Gurach Galgalo, said Somare primary school, some eight kilometres northwest of Moyale, "reopened for classes on Friday". But he denied that the school had been occupied by the Ethiopians. He said they blocked the road leading to the building. "They were there from Monday to Thursday," he added.
The MP said the Ethiopians' presence on Kenyan soil "probably had to do with some internal problems of their own". The area district commissioner and security committee had met the Ethiopians, and "everything has been resolved", he said. "They are now on their side of the border and the situation is calm."
