New UN representative appointed

    ABIDJAN

    UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has appointed Haile Menkerios, former permanent representative of Eritrea to the UN, as his new representative in Liberia.

    A senior diplomat, Menkerios will replace Felix Downes-Thomas as head of the UN Peace-building Support Office in Liberia (UNOL), Annan`s office announced. Downes-Thomas, it added, accomplished his mission in Liberia "with distinction and devotion".

    UN News service reported Annan as saying, in an exchange of letters with the President of the UN Security Council, that Menkerios would head UNOL starting on 1 February.
