WFP recommends food aid for 17,200 in Muyinga

Food Economy Assessment teams from the World Food Programme (WFP) have recommended that some 17,200 vulnerable households in Burundi's Muyinga province be targeted for food aid.

The teams reported that although crops improved due to recent favourable rains, some households were still depending on wage labour in the Gatare administrative zone, WFP said in its emergency report of 16 Nov.

It said that due to the deteriorating security situation, it had cancelled distributions planned in Bujumbura Rural province and emergency needs assessment in the southern province of Bururi.

From 22 Oct. to 4 Nov, it said, WFP along with partners Caritas and Groupe Volontariat Civil distributed 25 mt of food to some 7,000 malnourished people, through several nutritional centres in Bujumbura Rural and Bujumbura Mairie provinces. In addition, WFP reported, at least 2,300 Congolese refugees in Bujumbura received 38 mt of WFP food. During the same period, WFP sent 145 mt of food to partners, for distribution to 13,200 "particularly vulnerable persons".
