Government troops on Liberian border

Sierre Leone's government has secured a section of its border with Liberia as part of ongoing efforts to extend state authority across the country at the end of 10 years of fighting between government and rebel forces.

There is "extensive border security" from the coastal area of Sulima, through Zimmi, as far as the Gola Forest, the Sierra Leone Army's (SLA) information director, Major Desmond Henry, told IRIN on Friday. The three locations are in southeastern Sierra Leone. A forward operating base for the naval wing has been established at Sulima, Henry said, adding that police have also been deployed in most of the areas occupied by the SLA.
