The UN Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) reported its commander in Kabala area, Koinadugu district in northern Sierra Leone, Colonel Noros Sama, as saying that the security situation in the area was "calm and stable". Sama was briefing UNAMSIL's Force Commander, Lt-Gen Daniel Opande, who visited Kabala on Wednesday.
According to the statement, the area's local district officer also told Opande that plans were under way for the return of all paramount chiefs who fled during the war.
Opande urged representatives of the Civil Defence Forces (CDF) and the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) to set up a Joint Security Committee comprising the two sides as well as representatives from the local communities - a mechanism that had worked well in settling disputes in Koidu in Kono district, eastern Sierra Leone, UNAMSIL said.
The Force Commander also visited Bombali district in the north later on Wednesday, where he inspected the new camp for the disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration (DDR) of RUF combatants in Makeni, north Sierra Leone, UNAMSIL added.
