Rebel factions meet in Goma to prepare united front

Representatives of the three armed opposition movements in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) began to meet on Wednesday in the eastern town of Goma to harmonise their views five days before the start of the inter-Congolese peace talks in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the Rwandan-backed Rassemblement congolais pour la democratie (RCD-Goma) reported on Thursday.

"The talks will last two days and will allow the various Congolese rebel movements to align their views with those of their allies in preparation for the next round of dialogue," Kin Kiey Mulumba, RCD-Goma spokesman, told AFP.

Also expected to attend are representatives of Jean-Pierre Bemba's Gbadolite-based Mouvement pour la liberation du Congo (MLC); the factionalised, Ugandan-backed Rassemblement congolais pour la democratie - Mouvement de liberation, based in Bunia; Rwandan Minister for DRC and Burundi Affairs Patrick Mazhimaka; and Ugandan Foreign Minister James Wapakabhulo.
