Rebels loot shops in southern town

Dozens of armed men, described as fighters of the Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance (MFDC- French acronym), on Saturday looted shops and homes in Ziguinchor, 250 km south of Senegal's capital, Dakar, media sources have reported.

During the attack in the neighbourhood of Kande, the assailants also stole money from their victims. Sources in Senegal have told IRIN that these incursions often occur when fighters run out of food and other basic goods. The MFDC is an armed organisation that has been fighting since 1982 for the right to self-rule for Casamance, an area in southern Senegal.
