Efforts to revive anti-terrorism squad

Nigeria is making efforts to "revive" its anti-terrorism squad in the aftermath of the recent terrorist attacks in the United States, AFP quoted police spokesman Haz Iwendi as saying on Thursday. "In view of recent developments in the United States, the Nigerian government is making a serious effort to revive its anti-terrorism squad which we left in the cooler after Nigeria returned to democracy in May 1999," Iwendi said. The squad, formerly under the police, was disbanded after the military handed over to a civilian regime and following complaints that it had abused its power, he said. AFP reported that a committee was set up last year to look into how to resurrect the squad under a civilian dispensation but its report and recommendations were set aside. "But now, with the attack on the United States, we are considering the report and making efforts to revive the squad," Iwendi added.
