Journalists flee to Sudan

Two journalists have fled Eritrea following last week’s closure by the Eritrean government of the country’s private press. Milkias Mehretab and Semere Teazaz, respectively editor-in-chief and reporter for the ‘Keste Debena’ weekly newspaper, are now in Sudan, the US-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) reported on Friday. Earlier, both the journalists had reportedly been arrested several times for writing and publishing articles critical of the Eritrean government. ‘Keste Debena’ is one of eight privately owned Eritrean newspapers which were forcibly shut down last week after the government accused them of putting the country’s unity and best interests at risk.
