Churches revise appeal for IDPs and returnees

    ABIDJAN

    Action by Churches Together (ACT) says it is appealing for US $628,574 to enable it meet the "desperate needs" of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and returnees in Liberia.

    An earlier appeal for US $784,308, made five months ago, had "not been well responded to", receiving only 20.8 percent funding, ACT said in a statement on Thursday.

    Thursday's revised appeal now includes a proposal from the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) aimed at helping 23,000 IDPs living in temporary camps in Gbarpolu and Bong counties after fleeing fighting between pro- and anti-government forces in neighbouring Lofa County, northwestern Liberia.

    UMCOR is working with the Lutheran World Federation/World Service (LWF/WS) and the Concerned Christian Community to alleviate the suffering of the IDPs and returnees, the statement said. It hopes to provide seeds and tools, conduct health education campaigns and provide water and sanitation facilities.
