The government of Djibouti has denied having offered the United States logistical support for any future military operations arising as a consequence of last week's terrorist attacks in Washington and New York. "No one has officially asked Djibouti for the use of these facilities," a Djibouti senior official told IRIN on Friday. Reuters had reported on Thursday that Djibouti had offered America logistical support for any retaliatory attacks. Asked whether Djibouti would be prepared to assist the Americans if requested, the official told IRIN, "We will respond to any request when we are asked." Djibouti plays permanent host to a sizeable contingent of French military forces, and by virtue of its location at the southern tip of the Red Sea offers a key strategic position for any operations in the Gulf area.
