Fishing to resume in Lake Tanganyika

Residents of the southern Burundi town of Nyanza-Lac have hailed the decision on Tuesday authorising the resumption of fishing on Lake Tanganyika, the Burundi news agency, ABP, reported. Local authorities had suspended fishing in early September because of the increased activity of armed gangs moving to and from Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania. The suspension affected lakeside communities in the southern town of Kabonga to those on the Ruzibazi River, 110 km to the north. The river separates the southwestern and western Burundi provinces of Bururi and Bujumbura-Rural. The governor of Makamba has asked the fishermen to tell lakeside residents to ensure there was no illegal activity on the lake that would lead to another suspension of fishing.
