Swarms of locusts are threatening hundreds of hectares of cultivated farmland in the south of Guinea-Bissau, endangering the livelihood of about 1,400 families, state television reported.
Some 620 hectares (ha) of paddy fields in Catchaque and 1,000 ha in Mato Faroba have been affected by the insects, AFP reported Luis Antonio Tavares, director of the agriculture department, as saying.
Agriculture Minister Joaquim Namone has launched an international appeal for aid, saying that Guinea-Bissau lacks the resources to deal with the scourge, AFP reported. However, he added that some technicians were already on site trying to destroy larvae before they mature into adult locusts.
