Two people were killed on Saturday when an anti-tank mine exploded in southern Senegal's Casamance area, 'Le Soleil' newspaper, reported.
The state-owned Senegalese daily reported that the explosion occurred when a truck drove over a mine at Djibélor-Baraf, 5 km from Ziguinchor, which is the main town in the Casamance. According to 'Le Soleil', the explosion was the latest in a series of incidents that followed a brief period of calm in Casamance.
On Wednesday night, armed men attacked a village about 15 km from Ziguinchor, beat up some of the residents and stole chickens and goats, the daily said. On Friday, people travelling to Guinea-Bissau were robbed along the road leading south from Ziguinchor to the border outpost of Mpack.
Casamance lies between The Gambia, which separates it from most of northern Senegal, and Guinea-Bissau. Since 1982, the Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance (MFDC - Mouvement des forces democratiques de Casamance) has been fighting for self-determination for the area.
