Medecins sans Frontieres (MSF) has sent 37 mt of medicines, special food supplies and other materials to Niger, where food shortages induced by drought have affected hundreds of thousands of people this year. The supplies were airlifted from the MSF logistical base in Merignac, France, on 1 September, MSF said on Monday in its latest newsletter.
More than 600 children have already been admitted to two therapeutic feeding centres that MSF opened at the end of July at hospitals in the towns of Maradi and Dakoro so as to alleviate a deteriorating nutritional situation.
MSF reported that because of the increase in cases in Maradi, it had to put up new tents at its centre there. It said that to keep up with the number of new cases in both centres, its teams would try to reduce the time the children remain in hospital. The centres are staffed by 11 MSF volunteers and 50 local health workers.
