Police arrest leader of banned militia, media reports say

Nigerian police have arrested the leader of the banned Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), a militant ethnic organisation, 20 months after he was declared wanted, AFP reported police as saying on Wednesday. Ganiyu Adams was arrested at a police checkpoint in Lagos, according to AFP, which quoted police sources. The OPC purportedly seeks to protect the interests of the Yoruba, one of Nigeria’s main ethnic groups. It was banned in 1999 following bloody riots in which hundreds of people died.
