Disarmament starts in Koinadugu

Pro-government Civil Defence Forces started disarming in the northern district of Koinadugu on Monday and simultaneously handed over 39 former child soldiers to the Makeni office of Caritas, a child protection agency, the UN Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) reported.

In a symbolic ceremony in Makakura, about 10 km south of Kabala, attended by UN officials and representatives from the National Commission for Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (NCDDR), an AK-47 rifle was disabled and destroyed. Some 45 CDF combatants, who were later taken to a demobilisation camp in Kabala, brought in small arms, including self-loading rifles and a rocket launcher, which were also destroyed.

The disarmament process in the southern district of Moyamba and in Koinadugu will continue until 31 August, UNAMSIL reported. The World Food Programme has distributed some 15 mt of food to the DDR camps in Kabala and Moyamba, the UN agency reported on Monday.
