WFP reported on Friday it and other UN agencies would, toward the end of August, jointly carry out verification of all inmates in displaced peoples’ camps in Freetown and Waterloo.
The agency said the effort would also involve replacement of old ration cards. WFP reported that most IDPs at Barbara and Bailor, in Lungi just north of Freetown, had returned to their villages in Kambia now that the district had been declared safe.
Kambia has been secured by the Sierra Leonean Army following the successful disarmament of RUF fighters in May. WFP reported that one-third of the original caseload of IDPs were still in Barbara and Bailor waiting to harvest their crops.
Meanwhile, in the eastern town of Daru, WFP said the flow of refugees returning from Guinea and Liberia had now declined. Some of the recent returnees, who were trapped in Kailahun, eastern Sierra Leone, are showing signs of malnutrition. WFP said it and the UNHCR were jointly assessing Kailahun District to determine the number and needs of the returnees.
