British millions pledged for AIDS battle

    JOHANNESBURG

    Britain's international development secretary Hilary Benn has announced funding of close to US $214 million over the next four years to tackle HIV/AIDS around the world.

    The new funding will also aim to improve sexual and reproductive health for women and young people in developing countries.

    The UK's Press Association quoted Benn as saying: "Sexual and reproductive health and AIDS are inextricably linked. By taking on one, we know we are also helping to tackle the other. Far too many poor women in developing countries live with painful, disabling, and hidden injuries or illness because they are denied their rights to sexual and reproductive health."

    Approximately $66 million of the funds go to UNAIDS to pay for its role in leading the global HIV/AIDS effort and coordinating international donations, while some $147 million has been allocated to the UN Population Fund over four years.
