Sharia Court orders amputation of 15-year-old

An Islamic court in Kebbi State, northern Nigeria, has sentenced a 15-year-old boy to the amputation of one of his hands for stealing 32,000 naira (about US $286) from a businessman, media organisations reported.

The sentence imposed on Abubakar Aliyu is subject to ratification by the state’s Sharia Implementation Committee and final approval by the Kebbi State Executive Council before it can be carried out, ‘The Guardian’ newspaper in Lagos reported on Wednesday.

The teenager, who has the right to appeal in the state’s Sharia Appeal Court, would be the first person to suffer amputation for theft since the Sharia legal system was imposed in Kebbi in December 2000, ‘The Guardian’ reported.
