Five people are reported dead and some 139,000 others have been affected by flooding and waterlogged conditions caused by recent downpours in Ghanaian coastal towns, including the capital Accra, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Monday. The southern districts of Adoagyir, Nsawam, Zongo, and the Odaw Channel have been the worst affected by the flooding, OCHA said.
The most urgent threat is the possibility of an outbreak of water-borne diseases, such as cholera, diarrhoea and typhoid, due to a lack of clean water, OCHA said in its situation report. Ghana’s National Disaster Management Office (NADMO) has already distributed relief items such as tents, blankets, and kitchen tools to the population. However more aid is needed, including food, clothing, medical supplies, and water tankers.
Nine interagency teams, including several UN agencies, NGOs and NADMO have been formed to evaluate damage and assess the various needs of those affected, OCHA reported. WHO and UNICEF, which are on the assessment teams, have made US $20,000 available for the provision of water, drugs, health education and shelter.
