Over 420,000 Burundians were refugees at end of 2000

    NAIROBI

    More than 420,000 Burundians were refugees at the end of 2000, the US Committee for Refugees (USCR) said in its Burundi country report. It said about 400,000 Burundians were in Tanzania, and an estimated 20,000 in the DRC, some 1,000 in Rwanda and about 2,000 in “a half-dozen” other countries. It said an estimated 600,000 or more Burundians were internally displaced. According to the report, at least 150,000 people in Burundi were newly forced to flee during 2000. The country hosted about 6,000 refugees at year’s end, including some 5,000 from DRC and 1,000 from Rwanda, the report added.
