The Zimbabwe authorities on Wednesday began a "physical survey" of the flood-hit northeastern region to determine the needs of close to 12,000 people forced from their homes, the government's disaster management Civil Protection Unit (CPU) told IRIN. Crops, granaries, and homes have been washed away by floods in the Guruve and Muzavavani areas of Mashonaland central, along the borders with Mozambique and Zambia.
An estimated 11,600 people were forced to take shelter on higher ground, as rivers burst their banks due to continuing heavy rains. "They are not in any immediate danger, but the problem is accessibility - the roads have been damaged," CPU deputy head Sibusisiwe Ndhlovu said. The physical survey follows an aerial assessment by air force helicopters on Monday and Tuesday.
